Data Center HVAC Upgrade – Feasibility Study
Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus
Baltimore, MD

The main Data Center on JHU’s Homewood campus resides in the basement of Garland Hall, a 35-year-old building in which all major HVAC equipment is in the Penthouse. The Data Center is currently served by a combination of chilled water and DX units, for a total capacity of 35 Tons with only partial redundancy.

This Study addressed the possibility of replacing existing equipment to increase cooling capacity and redundancy. Associated issues were also addressed, such as space requirements, electrical service, structural inadequacies, aesthetic issues associated with placing equipment on the roof, asbestos removal, and cost. The study was used to establish budgeting goals for the project. MEC was prime consultant on a complete A/E tean for this study.
